The Surprising Secret Ingredient to Elevate Your Ham Game

Updated: Jan 19

John and I can't eat a whole ham so I decided to cook ham steaks instead. I used the usual apricot jam and brown sugar to glaze but I don't always do what is expected. I like to color outside the lines a lot, especially when cooking, which is why I have difficulty baking because you have to be precise. When preparing food I like to see what I have on hand, add what I think would taste good, then taste. If it needs something else or more of something I put in then I just add it. Don't be timid when cooking. If you go by your taste then you can't go wrong.

Doesn't that photo just make your mouth water?

Ingredients
  • 1-2 ham steaks

  • 3-4 Tbsp apricot jam

  • 1-2 Tbsp brown sugar

  • 1-2 tsp Five Spice

  • Olive Oil

Directions
  1. Mix all ingredients except for the ham steak in a bowl to make the glaze.

  2. Put a little olive oil in a pan. When the pan gets hot add the ham steak.

  3. Cook the ham steak for 2-3 minutes then flip. Brush the ham steak with the glaze. Cook for 2-3 minutes then flip. Add more of the glaze. Continue to do this until you get the color you want. Do not overcook because dry ham never tastes good.

Serve with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans. You can also choose other sides which go with ham. You can heat up the glaze to serve with the meal.

Yes, Five Spice is my secret ingredient. Trust me. You will love it. Five-spice powder is a common Chinese cuisine. It encompasses all five tastes - sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. The Asian seasoning is a mixture of star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns and fennel seeds.

I hope you prepare this soon and enjoy it as much as John and I did.
